restorative exercise

Katja is currently working towards certification as a Restorative Exercise Specialist.

Did you know that sitting in chairs physically shortens the muscles in the back of your legs? Did you know this can be a major cause of back, hip, and knee pain?
If you have shoulder, neck, wrist, foot pain… much of the problem may be coming from the way that you use your body through the day.

You can fix it! Learning how to properly align your body, how to lengthen muscles that have become tight, and to strengthen muscles that we don’t use in our modern lives will not only relieve the pain you feel, but dramatically increase your overall health!

The modern lifestyle is different from the conditions under which humankind evolved in many ways: nutritionally, socially, psychologically . . . and in terms of daily bodily movement habits. Both the quantity and quality of movements we make in modern life are unlike they were in the times of our ancestors, and as a result our activity is lessened, our flexibility is restricted, and our strength is diminished.

Health is dependent upon the flow of blood, lymph, and electricity in the body, and musculoskeletal movements are the primary driver for that flow. In terms of tissue nourishment, your movements exert an influence more important than the direct pressure of the heartbeat! Likewise, excess tension or under-development in your muscles can limit the health of not only the muscles themselves, but also in the organs and nerves they surround and support. Many of the chronic “diseases of affluence” epidemic in our society today have a component of misalignment to their cause and development.

In a Restorative Exercise class, you’ll learn to identify common misalignments, what their health impacts are and why they occur, and which exercises, stretches, and relaxation techniques can help correct them. You’ll practice these movement skills, and be guided through a progression of further refinements as you develop. In a personal session, Katja will assess your individual alignment points and select particular movements for you to practice and habits to adopt.

Learn to redevelop your body’s naturally evolved, reflexive, regenerative movements. You’ll be glad you did!

Restorative Exercise is a series of assessments and exercises designed to correct your musculoskeletal alignment and movement patterns, developed by biomechanist Katy Bowman.
Katja will begin teaching classes and giving individual Restorative Exercise sessions later this year.
